Tribulus Terrestris is a herb from Ayurveda that is mostly recommended for male health including virility and vitality, and specifically prescribed in Ayurvedic medicine to treat and maintain cardiovascular and urogenital health. It is commonly used by men to increase libido and is supposed to have  the ability to boost testosterone levels. Animal studies on Tribulus Terrestris indicate it does have an ability to increase levels of testosterone which is a critical hormone related to sex drive and performance. Historically, it has been used to treat a wide variety of conditions, but today it is mainly used by athletes to increase strength and muscle mass, as well as for sexual enhancement in both men and women.

Description

Tribulus Terrestris appears to be a relatively reliable and potent libido-enhancer in rats, and the lone human study confirmed an increases in sexual well-being (in both men and women) and erectile function. While it is not exactly known how Tribulus Terrestris works to increase libido and sexual performance, it is believed to enhance the androgen receptor density in the brain, which may help enhance the libido enhancing properties of androgens. Limited evidence suggests that it is weak to non-effective in enhancing fertility.

Additionally, a specific component found in Tribulus Terrestris, tribulosin, appears to be a potent cardio protector effective in the 1-10nM range. This has not yet been tested in living creatures, but remains a very promising option. In other animal research, the fruits of Tribulus Terrestris appears to protect the organs (primarily liver and kidneys) from oxidation damage at low doses and it also seems to exert anti-stress effects, confirming the status of tribulus terrestris as an adaptogen.
