Leonotis leonurus is commonly known as Wild Dagga (‘Lion’s Tail.’) It grows mainly in southern and eastern Africa. The main active alkaloid is leonurine.Wild Dagga flowers and leaves were used extensively by the Hottentot tribe of Southern Africa because of its supposed euphoric effect. In traditional African medicine, Leonotis leonurus, was widely used to treat many different ailments including fevers, headaches, malaria, dysentery and snakebite.
